The Story

At the Sleepy Creek Inn and Winery in Sleepy Creek, Virginia. Shirley (Cinda Jamison), a widow and the owner, is having money problems, so under pressure from her daughter, Juanita (Cricket Hall), and son-in-law, Delbert (John Hall), she reluctantly agrees to have a seance for Hans and Jacklyn Burkhalter (John and Linda O’Connor) of New York’s Park Avenue..

The Burkhalters’ daughter Jackie, who recently spent her honeymoon at the Inn, went missing upon returning home. Heartbroken the Burkhalters believe the Inn will be the perfect place for the seance because “that’s where the Burkhalters are happiest.”

With a downturn in the alignment of the stars and planets, and an approaching snow storm, Psychic Madame Esmerelda and her assistant must postpone the session one day. Unfortunately Shirley doesn’t get the message because Cletas “Bull” Schmidt (Isaac Covey) and Elizabeth “EZ” Zigler (Tammy Lynne Calef) who have escaped from the transport van taking them to the NYPD for questioning have intercepted the message and are then mistaken by Shirley as the psychic and her assistant. EZ says “All we gotta do is act like a couple weirdos to fool some people we don’t know into believing that we’re weirdos who know what we’re doing! How hard could it be with these bumpkins?”

Will they get away with it? Will Sheriff Wyatt Matters (Paul Jones) save the day? Or will “meddling spirits” have something say about it?

Background

We first planned to produce MEDDLING SPIRITS in March 2020. But you all know what happened then. In our final dress rehearsal stage of production, we had to make the painful decision to cancel the show due to COVID-19 restrictions.

This is the first time ACT 2 Theatre has produced a play written by a Clarksburg playwright. It’s Rex Kelch’s first foray as a writer after having directed many plays over the years. He and his friend Ben Moore have given us a funny, spooky farce that promises to be lots of fun for audiences.

This is also the first time we have two married couples playing two married couples in the same play. Cool, eh?
